The LDH activity of the red blood cells and the serum of 75 uraemic patients and 75 control subjects was studied. The possibility of the presence of factors inhibiting LDH activity in the serum of uraemic patients was also examined, by incubating red blood cells from normal subjects with serum from uraemic patients. The following conclusions were drawn: (a) There is no significant change in the LDH activity of the red cells of uraemic patients. (b) The LDH activity in the serum of uraemic subjects does not differ from that of normal controls. (c) No factors inhibiting LDH activity were demonstrated in the serum of uraemic patients. (d) No relationship was found between the activity of the enzyme in the red blood cells or in the serum and the severity of the uraemia. (e) There is no relationship between the LDH activity in the red cells or in the serum and the value of the haematocrit. |
