Abstrakt: This paper will form the foundation of a volume on multidisciplinary views of common, natural objects. The underlying assumptions that produce conflicting views of the natural world are sometimes difficult for students of the environment to identify. The social sciences and humanities have methods that can assist us to investigate multiple perspectives on nature. While many authors in these fields have addressed environmental perceptions from a cultural–studies perspective, the scientists have been largely mute. What is needed is a truly multi–disciplinary discussion that reflects the most rigorous science available, and the most current views from the humanities and social sciences.
