Abstrakt: AbstractSmoking during pregnancy continues to be a serious problem both globally and in the UK. Midwives have been identified as having an important role to play in addressing this problem. The aim of this study was to identify key issues to consider when developing training for midwives on smoking cessation and intervention techniques. Self-completion questionnaires were distributed to midwives working within two boroughs of the Northern and Yorkshire region of England (n=140) before and after the delivery of training on smoking cessation and intervention techniques. Key issues identified were the value of assessing not only staff training needs, but also their perceptions of their need for training; providing training that acknowledges the often differing circumstances of patients, while supplying staff with evidence-based tools that enable them to deliver consistent advice and support to all their patients throughout their pregnancies; and providing training that recognises the impact of their working situation on their ability to provide advice and support.
