Studies of energy loss in helium gas mixtures

Abstrakt: Helium gas mixtures have been shown to provide high tracking resolution for particles of momenta below 1 GeV/cbecause of the reduction in multiple scattering. We have studied the differential energy loss dEdxin several interesting helium gas mixtures, including helium-dimethylether and helium-isobutane. We present results of measurements done for pions, muons and electrons in a range of momenta from 100 to 400 MeV/cby means of a small drift chamber with a drift region of up to 8 cm, operated at atmospheric pressure and with electric fields of around 560 V/cm.
