Abstrakt: The grain morphology in Al2O3-0.4 wt.% TiO2samples derived from the same solution and subjected to the same high temperature heat treatments varies considerably depending on the preparation of the material prior to sintering. In samples calcined at 1200°C for 1 h and then sintered at 1400°C for 2 h, the volume fraction of anisotropic grains with aspect ratio of 2.0 was ∼11% in spun-on thin films, ∼61% for directly sintered gel pieces (GP), and 51% for sintered powder compacts derived from crushed gel pieces (P). In addition, these samples showed different aspect ratio distributions.
