Abstrakt: During the period of thirty-two months from September, 1927, to April, 1930, 500 patients with fractures of the humerus were admitted and treated at the Cook County Hospital of Chicago. This great volume of material afforded an excellent opportunity for careful study, and at the same time we were able to draw definite conclusions as to the frequency of complications, the method of treating both simple and complicated fractures, and the end-results of our labor.INCIDENCEFractures of the humerus compose about 5 per cent of all the fractures of the body. Stimson gives the figure at 4 per cent, von Bruns at 5 per cent, and Speed at 5.7 per cent.In our series 233 of the fractures, or 46.6 per cent, occurred in the right arm, while 255, or 51 per cent, were in the left.
