About 300 veterans suffering from injuries to the spinal cord and cauda equina are in constant residence in the medical wards of the United States Veterans Administration Hospital at Hines, Ill., under the care of the Medical Neurological Service. In addition, the Neurosurgical Service is responsible for patients with current acute injuries and those with old injuries who need surgical treatment, such as rhizotomy, exploration, or chordotomy. Patients requiring these procedures are transferred to the latter service, which has available an additional 75 beds.ORGANIZATIONStaffs are appointed and treatment is operated under the Deans' Committee plan. In this plan, the attending and consulting staffs are appointed from the faculties of the medical schools in the Chicago area.
