Laboratory experiments and clinical trials with gastric freezing indicate that this method promises to be a simple and effective manner of overcoming the peptic ulcer diathesis. Isolated canine gastric pouches subjected to a single freeze at —20° C. for an hour frequently failed to respond to gastric stimulants for periods as long as 8 months. The stomachs of 80 patients with duodenal ulcer have been frozen, with immediate relief of symptoms, early disappearance of ulcer craters, and depressed gastric secretory responses. The technique of gastric freezing is described and certain precautionary measures are recommended. |
