In 1959 a severe epidemic of type-1 poliomyelitis occurred in Des Moines and the surrounding area of Polk County, Iowa. Of the 178 cases reported between May 1 and Oct. 31, 74 were paralytic and 104 were nonparalytic. The epidemic was characterized by an early seasonal onset, with the highest incidence among unvaccinated preschool children of low-income families. The attack rate of the lower socioeconomic group was eight times higher than that of the upper socioeconomic group. The incidence of paralytic poliomyelitis was considerably lower in persons who had received three or more injections of Salk vaccine compared with that of the unvaccinated group. |
