Abstrakt: ACKNOWLEDGMENT This represents the 59th Annual Report on Medical Education in the United States and Canada compiled by the Council on Medical Education and Hospitals. This report is concerned primarily with basic medical education and is a part of the Council's response to one of the charges given it many years ago "To make an annual report to the House of Delegates on the existing conditions of medical education in the United States." Other levels of medical education are the subjects of annual Council reports dealing with internships and residencies1 and postgraduate medical education.2Much of the statistical data presented were derived from medical schools' responses to a questionnaire prepared jointly by the staffs of the Council on Medical Education and Hospitals of the American Medical Association and the Association of American Medical Colleges.
