Hysterectomy for carcinoma of the cervix has been a more or less unsatisfactory operation, the large percentage of early recurrences being an especially distressing feature of its results. The treatment of operable cases has now progressed to a well-nigh perfect degree of technic in competent hands. The radical abdominal operation, like the radical breast operation, when properly done, leaves nothing more that can be done in an operative way.The one remaining thing to accomplish is to educate both the laity and physician to such a point that the patient will present herself early to her physician, and that the physician will make an early diagnosis, which being made, the patient will be forthwith sent for operation, rather than be kept under the physician's remunerative local treatments till the golden opportunity has passed. When such a condition has been obtained the statistics of radical pelvic extirpation will show different results |
