IN 1936 Hardy and Crowe1 published a report of small acoustic tumors which had been completely asymptomatic and had been discovered incidentally in routine review of serially sectioned temporal bones of 250 autopsy cases. The report was a brief clinical review of acoustic tumors and consisted primarily of a report of six cases. In one of the cases the authors reported a bilateral tumor. It has frequently been cited as showing the incidence of acoustic neurilemoma in the general population. Since then, many temporal bones have been added to the collection and neurologic histopathology has advanced. Accordingly, we have repeated the Hardy and Crowe study, adding to it 240 more cases and examining the specimens for all other lesions as well.
