Various graft materials have been used in man to close defects in the tympanic membrane.1-8 Among them autogenous fresh vein has been used extensively with satisfactory results.1,4,6 Microscopic studies have been made on the implanted vein when a portion of the graft was removed after unsuccessful closure of the perforation. Studies have been reported on successfully repaired tympanic perforations in cats.7 The present study was undertaken to ascertain the role of autogenous fresh vein in the healing process of experimentally induced tympanic perforations in dogs. MATERIALS AND METHODS A defect, 0.4 X 0.6 cm, was produced in the tympanic membrane in one ear of each of two dogs. Such a defect would heal spontaneously in three weeks; therefore, after one week the defect was closed with a portion of fresh external jugular vein of the same animal.
