It was believed that the present type of enucleation scissors could be improved by adding a notch in the blades for trapping the optic nerve. An attempt was made to use standard-type scissors and notch the blades. It was found that a sufficiently large notch would weaken the blades too much and that the blades would not be closed at the depth of the notch.The new scissors have a slightly wider blade, to accommodate the notch and make complete closure. The notch was not rounded, in order make it easier to identify the optic nerve.With these scissors the optic nerve can be identified by straddling the nerve with the blades and then withdrawing while pressing against the nerve with one blade; the nerve can be felt to cross the notch.
