TO THE EDITOR: —In the April issue of the Archives of Ophthalmology (25:672, 1941) there is an article by Friedman entitled "Subconjunctival Hemorrhage as a Sign of Double Perforation of the Globe by a Foreign Body."The author stated that he first called attention to this symptom in 1931 (Subconjunctival Hemorrhage in Intraocular Foreign Bodies, Arch. Ophth.6:919 [Dec.] 1931). He made no claim of priority for this observation, and he made no mention of its having been observed by others. It is of historic interest that the same observation was made by Rübel (Beitrag zur klinischen Diagnose der Doppelperforation des Bulbus durch Eisensplitter, Klin. Monatsbl. f. Augenh.48: 572, 1910). Rübel's article was abstracted in the Ophthalmic Year Book (Jackson, E. : The Ophthalmic Year Book, Chicago, 1911, vol. 8, p. 282).Rübel regards subconjunctival hemorrhage which is not connected with the primary wound or ecchymosis of the |
