The purposes of this study were: (1) to discover the effect of insulin on the blood sugar of psychotic patients as a preliminary to other insulin studies; (2) to find the type of reaction to insulin in the affective and schizophrenic psychoses; (3) to determine whether there is any difference in the reaction between patients with affective and schizophrenic psychoses; (4) to make a comparison of the reaction in psychotic patients with that obtained by Bartlett in normal persons. METHOD The method employed was similar to that used by Bartlett1 in his studies on the reaction of the blood sugar in normal and diabetic subjects after hypodermic injections of insulin. His method was to estimate the blood sugar during fasting, inject 10 units of insulin Lilly U=20 subcutaneously, and determine the blood sugar at one and one half hours and three and one half hours after the injection.
