TO THE EDITOR. —In a recent article, Wallen et al described oligoclonal bands (OCBs) in CSF of 12 of 13 patients with African Burkitt's lymphoma with probable or definite meningeal metastases (Archives 1983;40:11-13). These authors noted the possibility that the OCBs might have been synthesized by the lymphoma cells. They were unable to find a prior report of OCBs in neoplastic meningitis.We recently observed a patient with adenocarcinoma of the lung that invaded the spinal canal, compressing the cervical cord and infiltrating the meninges and cauda equina. The CSF formula was typical of meningeal carcinomatosis, though cytologic features were normal on three occasions.1 A review of medical records at the University of California hospitals, San Francisco, showed three additional cases of confirmed meningeal carcinomatosis for which CSF agarose gel electrophoresis was performed.
