Abstrakt: Muscle calcium pump activity was studied in four patients with periodic paralysis complicating thyrotoxicosis, one with thyrotoxicosis alone and one euthyroid subject who had thyrotoxicosis and periodic paralysis a year ago. Both the calcium pump adenosine triphosphatase activity and the total amount of calcium uptake by the sarcoplasmic reticulum showed a decrease during thyrotoxic periodic paralysis but a reversion back to normal after the attack. The decrease in the activity of the calcium pump was parallel to the severity of paralysis and the degree of hypokalemia.
