Histochemical Survey of Brain Tumor Enzymes

Abstrakt: A previous report from this laboratory described the results of a histochemical study of five enzyme systems in 30 brain tumors.1 An additional 30 tumors have been studied in greater detail, so that this report concerns the histochemical observations on ten enzyme systems of neoplasms of the central nervous system. MATERIALS AND METHODS The material consisted of 30 surgical specimens including 9 meningiomas, 13 gliomas, and 8 miscellaneous intracranial tumors. Specimens were obtained at operation and immediately immersed in an isopentane solid carbon dioxide (Dry Ice) bath and then stored for short periods at —20 C. Sections, cut on a cryostat at a thickness of 6μ and mounted on glass slides, were placed in the appropriate incubation media. In every case additional tumor specimens were processed for routine histological study, and cytological diagnosis was established after review by the staff and neuropathologist.Established histochemical methods were employed in the
