The behaviors, attitudes, and affect of patients which refer to psychotherapy or the psychotherapist are of critical importance. Most of what has been written about treatment oriented behavior of patients has been based upon the observations of a single psychotherapist and his experiences as a therapist. Because of the need for more data of a different kind, I undertook the present research of treatment oriented behavior using operational definitions and statistical techniques. The data of this research have come from questionnaires filled out by 29 psychotherapists on 195 patients being seen in outpatient psychotherapy. The 29 therapists answered questions about themselves relating to training, experience, and theoretic orientation. For each patient the therapist provided information about frequency of therapeutic sessions, usual length of sessions, and time that the patient had been in treatment with the therapist. In addition, the therapist rated each patient as to frequency and intensity of treatment |
