Abstrakt: To the Editor.—"Gone to graveyards, everyone" to quote the song "Where Have All the Flowers Gone?" (Pete Seegar). Derided by their full-time academic colleagues, purged by the University Hospital troglodytes, they are all gone. Virtually all of my role models as an intern and as a resident (Continued on p 2598.) (Continued from p 2594.) were attendings who were in full-time medical private practice. It has been years since I have been able to attend at our local Veterans Administration hospital. Now we have the dictatorship of the proletariat (euphemistically described as "the house staff have a different agenda from the private physicians") to provide most/all of the care in tertiary centers and health maintenance organizations.A few of us, like Cincinnatus, remain plowing our fields, awaiting the call.
