REPORT OF A CASE Over the past 20 years, a 75-year-old white man noted gradually progressive blue-to-black papules scattered over his cheeks, nipples, and upper chest. The number of papules increased and darkened but otherwise remained asymptomatic. Of interest, his father had similar lesions located in the same areas.Findings from the physical examination revealed multiple 1- to 4-mm nonblanchable blue-to-black papules over both cheeks, the nipples, and the upper chest. Telangiectasia was noted sporadically (Fig 1).A biopsy specimen was obtained from the upper chest and was stained with hematoxylin-eosin (Fig 2).What is your diagnosis? DIAGNOSIS: Hereditary glomangiomas. HISTOPATHOLOGIC FINDINGS The biopsy specimen of the papillary dermis revealed large, irregularly shaped vascular spaces. The vascular spaces were lined by a single layer of flat endothelial cells. The glomus cells were peripheral to the endothelial cells. DISCUSSION Glomus tumors are either solitary or multiple.1-3 The solitary form is more common. |
