Dr Frazier has explained in some detail his perspective of the psychosomatic aspects of allergy. Unfortunately, this type of book is more a personal reflection than a scientific documentation; it reads like a diary of the day's events with case references and anecdotes. To construct the psychosomatic framework, Dr Frazier uses a foundation of anxiety, personality, and psychophysiology. Quickly colds, skin problems, gastrointestinal turmoil, and nervous system maladies are inserted in hopes of keeping the structure together. Even re-reading individual segments of the book leaves one convinced only of Dr Frazier's consummate clinical skills and not of the scientific basis for his conclusions.Perhaps this book is meant for the friendly bookstore shelf, where legions of allergy sufferers can extract pertinent information. The reader who is a physician, however, will not be convinced that Dr Frazier's experience in practice is relevant to explaining the vagaries of allergy. Confronted with the |
