AUREOMYCIN AND ITS EFFECT IN EARLY SYPHILIS: One-Year Progress Report

Abstrakt: IN APRIL, 1950, in a progress report1 based on a study of 67 patients with dark-field-positive syphilis, it was concluded that oral administration of 70 gm. of aureomycin over 11⅓ days causes a progressive decline in the serologic titer, rids syphilis lesions of surface spirochetes in an average of 39 hours, maintains high aureomycin blood levels, and shows cerebrospinal fluid aureomycin levels for 50% of the patients.The present study is based on the results of observation for 12 to 15 months on 101 patients with dark-field-positive secondary syphilis. All patients were previously untreated for syphilis.The distribution of patients by race, sex, and age is indicated in the table. The age range for the group was 17 to 69 years.
