The pathologic significance of benign nodules or tumors in the thyroid body and their relation to states of hyperactivity of the gland are subjects concerning which there are profound differences of opinion and widespread confusion. The view most generally accepted up to the present time has been that all the tumefactions or nodules in cases of nodular goiter are adenomas, in the sense of true benign neoplasms, and that any anatomic or functional disturbances occurring in these patients are due to the activity and growth of the tumors. It is our purpose in this paper to present a brief analysis of 109 consecutive cases of nodular goiter with hyperthyroidism in which the patients were operated on during the last year, together with a review of 910 cases of hyperthyroidism, and as a result of this study to present a conception of the pathologic and and clinical significance of benign tumors |
