Abstrakt: DEEP venous thrombosis and pulmonary embolism associated with the use of oral contraceptives have provoked concern. Over a century ago Virchow1 categorized the three major factors predisposing to venous thrombosis as (1) vein wall damage, (2) increased coagulability of the blood, and (3) local stasis. Oral contraceptives have been implicated as the cause of alterations in the structure of the vein wall2 and in the clotting mechanism.3-6 The present study evaluates the effects of norethynodrel with mestranol (Enovid) on venous blood flow. METHOD AND MATERIALS One milliliter of norethynodrel with mestranol, containing 2 mg of norethynodrel and 0.030 mg of mestranol in corn oil, was administered intramuscularly daily to 18 adult female dogs. With the subjects under anesthesia with pentobarbital administered intravenously, the femoral venous flow was measured with a noncannulating probe and an electromagnetic square-wave flowmeter. Values were determined from the average of three sequential measurements.
