Traumatic asphyxia and rupture of the left leaf of the diaphragm developed in a 52-year-old white man after a severe compression and crushing injury of the left wall of the chest. An essential feature of the treatment consisted of emergency intubation and ventilation followed by operative repair of the ruptured diaphragm. Because of inadequate alveolar ventilation, tracheostomy was done, and positive pressure breathing was instituted. |
