Oral Contraceptives and Malignant Melanoma

Abstrakt: To the Editor:—A recent case suggests a possible relationship between the administration of oral contraceptives and the development of a malignant melanoma.Report of a Case:—A 25-year-old married woman was first seen on Jan 2, 1968, complaining of indigestion, nervousness, and weight loss from 98 to 89 lb. The patient was 5 feet 3 inches tall and nulliparous. Complete examination revealed little other than mild acne vulgaris and moderately underdeveloped internal genitalia. She had a history of considerable marital difficulty and had much anxiety over her husband's desire that she become pregnant "to solve their problems." The patient was treated with four injections of nandrolone phenpropionate (Durabolin), and on Jan 18, the weight had increased to 95 lbs. Symptoms markedly improved with administration of a prochlorperazine and isopropamide mixture (Combid) twice a day, and small doses of hydroxyzine hydrochloride (Atarax) in liquid form whenever necessary.
