Despite the growing concern over the future of the American family doctor, there have been few studies of his background or current work. In this study 103 randomly selected family physicians in New York state were visited. The data show that these physicians do provide continuing care to family units, a central concept of family medicine. Their satisfaction with their work is apparent, and the use of their services by the public can be judged by their long hours and heavy work loads. These data should provide useful information for those interested in developing realistic training programs for the family doctor of tomorrow. |
