Two patients who received methoxyflurane anesthesia during abdominal surgery developed polyuric renal failure within 24 hours after their operations. Both patients died after complicated clinical courses which were dominated by renal failure. Toxic effects to the kidneys suspected of being related to methoxyflurane were characterized by polyuria and progressive azotemia. Postmortem examination in both cases revealed crystals resembling calcium oxalate in renal tubules. The possibility of concurrent toxic effects to the liver is also considered. |
