Abstrakt: The urinary excretion of radioactive chromium (51Cr) can be used as an index of erythrocyte survival, using washed erythrocytes labeled with51Cr, in a study period of four days. This method also appears to be a better index of erythrocyte destruction than the conventional erythrocyte survival measurement because the51Cr activity in the urine is a function only of the rate of in vivo destruction and elution of labeled erythrocytes, and data obtained from excretion of51Cr show virtually no dispersion from a simple exponential curve. The dose can be decreased to 10 microcuries or less and the amount of labeled blood injected can be as little as 1 ml. This method has a potential for use in in vivo compatibility testing of donor blood.
