Serum iron measurements from 500 presumably healthy people showed that 6% had levels that were grossly elevated to 200μg/100 ml or above. Further studies of these serum samples disclosed a high incidence of abnormal liver function tests. Retesting the individuals with high serum iron levels showed that some had values within the normal range. Serum iron levels of 3,699 San Diego blood donors were 200μg or higher in 3.5%. The cause of the elevated serum iron levels was not established. |
