In factor XI deficiency, plasma infusions remain the primary source of replacement but often prove inadequate in a hemorrhagic crisis. A large amount of factor XI was found to be present in a prothrombin-containing concentrate. This was used when a severely factor XI-deficient patient required extensive hip surgery, during which excellent surgical hemostasis was achieved. Despite the considerable risk of viral hepatitis, this concentrate should prove highly useful in deficient patients with actual or prospective life-threatening hemorrhage.(JAMA 229:163-165, 1974) |
