This easy-to-read paperback originated in a conference held in Little Rock, Ark, on "Gastroenteropathy of Aging" and consists of 17 chapters, nine of which were authored by Dr Texter and his colleagues at the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences, Little Rock. The editor has succeeded in concisely blending pertinent basic science information with selected clinical topics such as geriatric aspects of nutrition, hepatobiliary disease, vascular problems, inflammatory bowel disease, colorectal polyps, and cancer. It was elected not to emphasize other malignant neoplasms or pancreatic abnormalities, although it is pointed out that pancreatic insufficiency in older subjects may be more frequent than previously recognized.The small bowel is the focus of almost a third of the text, including a comprehensive, well-documented, 24-page presentation by Dr Peter R. Holt on intestinal absorption and malabsorption in the elderly. Other noteworthy chapters discuss pharyngoesophageal function and swallowing problems in the aging patient and |
