This is the fourth edition of a recognized useful text in a complex and expanding field. Many new procedures have been added since publication of the previous edition in 1978.The first chapter discusses the interpretations of laboratory data and reviews concepts of sensitivity and specificity. This is an important addition, and perhaps the actual equations used to determine terms such as "specificity" can be included in the future. From chapters 2 through 34, the clinical procedures are broken down into organ- or disease-oriented sections. Finding a given disease state and the related relevant test is easy to do in this well-organized text. Most of the chapters are in sentence form; but where graphs and charts have proved to be helpful, such as in the chapters on infectious diseases and serum proteins, they are used in a concise manner.Chapter 35, entitled "Special Category Tests," is an addendum to each |
