Abstrakt: This is a 272-page authoritative text written by 27 separate authors including many of the most active investigators in the field. In 16 chapters, the authors comprehensively present relevant new information concerning all aspects of bacterial meningitis. Each chapter concludes with a bibliography that contains a review of the most recently published literature and often key historical references. There is an excellent blending of scientific information with practical clinical applications.In early chapters, there is a definite emphasis on pathogenesis, including the microbiology of infectious agents and immunology of host responses, and the pathophysiology of acute bacterial meningitis. The authors are lucid to the point that the reader can deduce those logical points where the clinician might intervene to stop or at least modify the progression of the disease process.
