Abstrakt: As stated in the preface, "The objective of this textbook, written by authors of international repute, is to provide in a single volume a comprehensive reference source for all who are involved in the medicine of old age."The early chapters are excellently written and present a general perspective on old age and the process of aging. Particular attention should be called to the excellent chapter that not only reviews the effect of aging on neuroendocrine regulation but also presents the effect aging has on the laboratory tests used to evaluate endocrine functions. The chapter "Preventive Aspects of Geriatric Aging" is somewhat disappointing in the casual approach to prevention via immunizations, suggesting that the indication for use of influenza vaccine "would be an approaching epidemic" and that "polyvalent pneumococcal vaccines may also be of use in limiting the spread of infection in an institution."
