Abstrakt: A GLC procedure is described for the resolution and quantitative determination of the meso and racemic forms of 2,3-butanediol. The method involves direct injection of a methanolic solution into a GC equipped with a hydrogen FID. Polyethylene glycol 400 effected excellent resolution of the two forms. The procedure is rapid and specific with the chromatogram completed in approximately thirty minutes. Conditions for the purification of commercial 2,3-butanediol employing preparative GLC are also outlined.
