A pyrolysis apparatus using a pulsed ruby laser was constructed and tested on a variety of samples. For comparison, these samples were also pyrolyzed with a filament type pyrolyzer and with a tube-furnace type pyrolyzer. The chromatograms obtained from the laser apparatus generally show simpler patterns and allow greater distinction to be made between similar types of substances than do the conventional pyrolyzers. |
