Abstrakt: SummaryThree instruments, the Sound Impulse Hammerfor the detection and confirmation of suspected internal defects; the Resistograph Mfor defect detection and quantification of internal defects and the Fractometerfor the measurement of elasticity and fracture strength of wood, have recently been developed from the Visual Tree Assessment (VTA) method to assist arboriculturists, landscape architects and planners to supplement their observations where a tree's stability and durability is suspect. This paper concentrates on how these instruments are used in tree inspections and is based on the authors' experiences of their use in the field. The authors emphasise that they would welcome reports on their use and would be pleased to consider suggestions for their improvement.
