This paper discusses a reexamination process to be used by the quality assurance unit (QAU) to enhance the efficiency of its operation and to assure the quality of the QAU work product. The first step of the two-step process is a self-assessment based on a series of questions concerning the QAU operation. The questions are divided into the following five major categories: 1. Inspection and audit procedures, 2. Analysis and reporting of findings, 3. Interpersonal skills, 4. Training and development programs, and 5. Management's assessment of the QAU work product. The second step of the process is the use of the information obtained from the self-assessment to implement changes which are designed to enhance QAU efficiency and the managerial oversight of the QAU work product. The benefits of this simple and quick process are especially valuable during times of downsizing and reengineering when there are staff reductions, an increase in employee stress, and a decrease in management oversight of the QAU function. The two-step process can be adapted for use by other departments by the substitution of appropriate questions in place of those in this model. |
