Abstrakt: Teaching reading skills to first grade students who primarily speak Spanish poses some special problems. This study utilized 24 classrooms involving 522 students. Three methods were used to investigate 18 independent variables which in a broad sense covered the areas of primary mental abilities, primary reading profiles, and Hawthorne concepts-symbolization tests. The results, in part, stress the importance of careful diagnosis for each child. Working with such related skills as listening comprehension, spatial relations, and auditory association, the overall effectiveness of reading programs may be increased significantly.
