Chickpea (Cicer arietinumL.) nodulation variants (high nodulating (HN) and low nodulating (LN) selections) and unselected bulk cultivar (UC) of cvs. ICC 5003 and ICC 4948 were used in the present study. Nodule biomass, plant nitrogen content and grain yield of HN selections of both cultivars were higher than the respective LN selection and unselected bulk cultivar at normal nitrogen fertility level. With the increase in N fertility level, nodule biomass decreased but plant nitrogen and grain yield increased in all the nodulation variants. Grain yield of HN selection of cv. ICC 5003 was higher than that of LN selection at higher N fertility level but yield of HN and LN selections of cv. ICC 4948 were equal. Nodule occupancy by antibiotically marked strains Ca181 and IC 76 was higher in both unselected bulk cultivars as compared with LN and HN selections at normal soil N fertility level. Soil N fertility level had no effect on nodule occupancy by either strain in each of the nodulation variants of both cultivars. At normal N level, a similar trend of nodule occupancy was observed in nodulation variants of cv. ICC 5003 by the lacZ marked strains IC 76-L and HS-32. |
