Abstrakt: The growth of large single crystals (70 × 40 × 20 mm3) of 3-methoxy-4-hydroxy-benzaldehyde (MHBA) and the best solvents for the growth process are reported. Specifically, the growth process, morphology, and defects in these MHBA crystals are discussed. A high conversion efficiency of 75% has been obtained with MHBA crystals by using a mode-locked Nd:YAG laser, and direct frequency doubling of the light from a GaAlAs laser diode was accomplished using these crystals at room temperature in order to generate the violet second harmonic.
