Measurement of cytoplasmic free calcium, [Ca2+]i, in single human endothelial cells has shown that low doses of the inflammatory mediator histamine evoke asynchronous repetitive spikes in [Ca2+]iwhereas high doses cause a maintained elevated [Ca2+]i. We discuss possible regulatory mechanisms, and the potential physiological and pathological implications of such a frequency-modulated [Ca2+]isignalling system. |
