Abstrakt: IN this paper we detail the evolution of the biochemically and immunologically related Pb and PPb proteins in the saliva of anthropoid primates, using electrophorectic and immunologic criteria. Whereas the PPb protein evolved in hominoids after their divergence from cercopithecoids and before the hylo-batid-pongid/hominid divergence, the Pb proteins evolved earlier and are found in cercopithecoids and some platyrrhines. We further show that there is a good relationship between the electrophoretically determined forms of the Pb proteins in salivas of anthropoid primates and the type of diet they consume as well as with certain aspects of their dental structure. Electrophoretically complex forms of the Pb proteins are associated with a predominantly frugivorous-folivorous diet, whereas simpler forms are seen when the diet is predominantly insectivorous.
