THE formation of large mineral deposits of elementary sulphur, for example in Sicily, France, Texas and Louisiana, has often been attributed to microbial processes1–3. The similarity of stable sulphur isotope ratios in various sulphur bearing minerals4–8to fractionation rates obtained in laboratory bacterial cultures9–12gives strong support to the biogenic origin of sulphur deposits. |
