DIRECTION OF MESOGENIC SIDE CHAINS AND ITS EFFECT ON THE PROPERTIES OF POLYMERIC FERROELECTRIC LIQUID CRYSTALS

Abstrakt: AbstractThe properties of siloxane copolymers with a dimethylsiloxane unit and two kinds of ferroelectric liquid crystal (FLC) units, and those of blends of the copolymers, are examined. The mesogenic side chain of each FLC unit is connected to the main chain in the direction opposite to the other. Although the copolymers and the blend show similar phase behaviors, a higher-order smectic phase is stabilized in the blend. This is attributed to the strong interaction, which is shown by an IR analysis, between the mesogenic side chains in the blend.
