Abstrakt: Abstract:Few of Samuel Johnson's relationships have been as misunderstood and little appreciated as his friendship with Thomas Warton. The evidence suggests that the relationship was among the most emotional of Johnson's life and that what lessened the spirit of the friendship after the mid-1750s was not a difference in personality or literary taste, as had been been commonly thought, but rather it was Johnson's realization that his emotional stake in the relationship had been too high.
