The following report describes an interesting problem encountered in our laboratory. High toluene values were found in charcoal tube blank samples submitted for analysis using a gas chromatographic method. The reason for the high toluene blank was traced to permeation of toluene through the plastic caps on charcoal tubes from the atmosphere in which they were stored during the shipping of the samples. The practical problem encountered reemphasizes the importance of using field blanks and proper shipping and storing procedures for charcoal tube samples after their collection. |
